The federal electorate of Gippsland has an approximate area of 33,000 km².

It is comprised of 203 suburbs including Airly, Alberton, Alberton West, Anglers Rest, Bairnsdale, Balook, Banksia Peninsula, Bellbird Creek, Bengworden, Bete Bolong North, Bingo Munjie, Blackwarry, Boisdale, Boolarra, Boolarra South, Boole Poole, Broadlands, Brodribb River, Bruthen, Budgee Budgee, Budgeree, Bullumwaal, Bumberrah, Bundalaguah and Bundara plus parts of another 20 suburbs.

It is comprised of 79 localities including Arbuckle, Bemm River, Benambra, Bendoc, Bete Bolong, Billabong, Bindi, Bonang, Briagolong, Brookville, Brumby, Buchan, Buchan South, Buldah, Buragwonduc, Cabbage Tree Creek, Chandlers Creek, Club Terrace, Cobbannah, Cobberas, Combienbar, Crooked River, Darriman, Deddick Valley and Deptford plus parts of another 11 localities.

It is comprised of the councils of East Gippsland Shire, Gabo Island and Wellington Shire plus parts of Latrobe City.

It is comprised of parts of the state electorates of Gippsland East, Gippsland South and Morwell.

It is surrounded by the federal electorates of Eden-monaro, Indi and Mcmillan.
