Jeparit, Victoria

Jeparit image

Nestled around the Wimmera River and attached to Lake Hindmarsh, Jeparit is a treasure trove of history, nature, and peace. Being halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, off the main highway, the town makes a perfect choice for a stop-over, meeting place, or getaway – long or short term. Jeparit is the closest town to Lake Hindmarsh. The lake is generally a dry lake, but after consecutive high rainfall years fills to become the largest natural freshwater lake in Victoria. Whether dry or full the lake is a mecca for birdwatchers and wildflowers. Jeparit is a quaint little rural town on the borders of the Southern Mallee and the Wimmera regions with a predominant farming sector featuring cropping, grazing, and running stock of sheep and some cattle. Immerse yourself in the agricultural history of the area at the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum. The town is the birthplace of Australia's longest serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, who was Prime Minister from 1939-1941 and 1949-1966, keeping the top job for over 18 years. Some regard him as Australia's greatest leader. In honour of Sir Robert Menzies, his achievements and political success, Jeparit has erected a spire, a town square, and a plaque.
