About Carpentaria Shire Community Directory

The Carpentaria Community Directory is an online hub for the sparsely populated Carpentaria Shire in Queensland’s Gulf Savannah region. Centred on Normanton and the fishing port of Karumba, the shire covers almost 65,000 square kilometres of savannah grasslands, wetlands and coastline. The directory lists local health clinics, council services, schools, sporting clubs, cultural organisations and emergency contacts, making it easy for residents, pastoral workers and travellers to find community support and activities in this remote Gulf country.

Find Local & Visiting Services in Carpentaria Shire

Health, emergency and welfare services in the Carpentaria area include small health clinics, visiting doctors and specialists, crisis and counselling hotlines, accommodation support and welfare assistance programmes. The directory also lists community clubs and interest groups, arts and creative projects, sports and recreation clubs, youth programmes, cultural and migrant services, environmental groups and religious or philosophical organisations, alongside education, training and employment services. Because this shire is remote, many specialist services such as allied health care, legal assistance and disability or youth support are delivered by visiting providers or regional outreach, while local community organisations and volunteers offer daily support and cultural activities.

Carpentaria Region Overview

Bordering the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, this remote shire centres on the historic towns of Normanton and the fishing port of Karumba. Cattle grazing and commercial barramundi fishing are the mainstays, and tidal wetlands teem with birdlife and crocodiles. Those in the know head to Karumba’s Norman River at dusk to watch golden sunsets over the water while catching king salmon, and wander past Normanton’s brightly painted Purple Pub and heritage wharf to soak up outback maritime history.

Carpentaria Shire Council has an approximate area of 64,000 km².

It is comprised of parts of the state electorates of Cook and Traeger.
